During one of my hunting visits with the Hadzabe (AKA the Bushmen of Tanzania) we scoured the bush at a near-run pace, looking for anything to eat under the blazing morning sun…. Finally after 2 hours, the boys silently circled a thorned acacia tree, arrows pointed up — they’d spotted a bird. 🐦 Armed with only bows & arrows made from sticks, and a pocket-blade forged by the neighboring tribe of blacksmiths, the Hadzabe are expert huntsmen despite seemingly impossible circumstances. On this particular morning, they managed to hunt only one small bird — building a fire right there in the bush, plucking the feathers off their conquest, and cooking up breakfast to share equally amongst everyone (including me, as they insisted.) We each got one tiny piece of meat, no larger than your fingernail. I love visiting the Hadzabe because despite sharing in the same human experience, they live under completely different values than most of the rest of the world. Community & sharing is above...
