John and Nicole Gish never made public the name of the 7-month-old foster child who died. Nor did they name the infant’s 14-year-old mother, who lived in their home last spring with the baby. But in Facebook posts, John Gish, the elected Washington County attorney since 2017, expressed the couple’s heartache and frustration over the infant’s sudden death in September, posting pictures of them with the baby in happier times. What the iowahhs did next was also unusual and alarming: A supervisor called and told Gish to remove his Facebook posts, as well as photos of the infant. If he didn’t, the supervisor said, the couple risked losing their foster care license. The Gishes decided they didn’t want to be quiet.
