If there’s one thing I think artists are great at, it’s getting too deep in our own heads. Perhaps even obsessing on the wrong things. Unsolicited advice used to really impact me, especially when I was just getting started. I’m grateful that I trusted my gut and would push past these barriers. The ability to move forward and keep trying new ways of growth is what has shaped me as the artist I am today. To this day, I think being an artist is riding a fine line of taking advice and respecting it, but also determining what you will and won’t apply in your practice. I don’t think any great artist was made by completely following the rules. Instead they challenged them, and in the process paved new ways for others to follow.
