The N-word in English sounds like the word “that” in Mandarin. It’s pronounced “nà ge”, and when you’re just starting to learn Chinese, it can really catch you off guard. That moment of confusion, that discomfort, can actually be a bridge.
When you’re Chinese and you say it around your Black friends, they might look at you sideways. And now you have to have a conversation. When you’re Black and you’re learning Chinese and realize it sounds like a word you’ve spent your whole life reclaiming, that’s a moment to pause. To ask questions. To share history. To talk about language, culture, power.
It’s awkward, yeah. It’s also a door. A chance to appreciate how different worlds collide, and how much stronger we are when we step through that door together.
