As the Tony Awards air tonight, we will be watching and cheering on these two Howard University alumni ✨ “Purpose,” the play directed by Phylicia Rashad (B.F.A. ’70), dean emerita of Howard University’s Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts, is nominated for “Outstanding Broadway Play.” “Purpose” was directed by Rashad and written by Tony Award-winning playwright and producer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. It explores themes around “faith, politics, and the legacy of Black radicalism.” This play marks Rashad’s Broadway directorial debut. Alumnus Gary Edwin Robinson will be presented with the 2025 Excellence in Theatre Education Award, which recognizes a K-12 theatre educator in the United States who has “demonstrated exemplary impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession.” Robinson is currently the head of the Theatre Arts Program at Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and will receive $10,000 as a result of this honor.
