🚫 Bottom trawling has no place in marine protected areas.
But in both the UK and France, it’s happening on a massive scale.
Oceana’s latest reports reveal that in 2024 alone:
🇫🇷 France’s most iconic protected areas experienced 17,000 hours of bottom trawling in 2024
🇬🇧 UK offshore protected areas saw more than 20,000 hours of this destructive fishing method last year
Bottom trawling involves dragging heavy nets across the seafloor — wrecking habitats and harming marine life. Doing this in so-called "protected" areas makes no sense.
We’re at the UN Ocean Conference this week calling on governments to ban bottom trawling in marine protected areas — because ocean protection must mean real protection.
