Hastings was in uncharted territory when it played Section 9 champion Highland Monday, June 9, in the NYSPHSAA Class B regional final. The Yellow Jackets ran into a buzzsaw and fell to the Huskies in five innings at Monroe-Woodbury High School. Highland was up 3-2 after one inning but the Huskies scored five in the bottom of the second through an intensifying rainstorm. "You can't control Mother Nature. We have to control the controllable and what we can control," Hastings coach Katilin Degnan said. "Unfortunately, when it was the hardest downpour, we were out in the field. They (Highland) did their job and put the ball in play and we needed to protect it. Our mental took a hit. It was very difficult circumstances, especially for our pitchers. Degnan said Highland pitcher Alexa Pavese did a good job of managing the conditions. "Unfortunately, we couldn't come out with the win," Degnan said.
