Alexis Tighe was certain the emotions would pour out during the bus ride back to White Plains. Those stoic expressions while gathering their belongings, she said, had veiled the disappointment they felt.
Understandably so, of course. Even the most pollyannish person would be upset after a season-ending loss, particularly in a game that was as competitive.
Beneath that sadness, though, is a tremendous sense of pride in what this group did accomplish. As the pain eventually fades, so does that fixation over what could've been, giving way to an appreciation of what was.
White Plains overcame the heartbreaks of the recent past and chucked that "bridesmaid" label like a bouquet, capturing their first Section 1 softball championship last week. That, coach Chris Rowan said, is reason enough for his team to "keep their heads up."
"It means a lot and I'm grateful for what we accomplished," Tighe said. "I wouldn't have wanted to do it with anybody else. This is a special team."
