Somers has momentum.
And plenty of it.
The hyper-focused Tuskers went right after Wantagh in a NYPSHSAA Class C regional final Saturday, June 7, at Yorktown High School, posting a win and securing a spot in the state semis. It was the first Section 1 postseason victory over a Long Island team since 2019.
“We really didn’t think about that,” Somers midfielder Dylan Jimenez said. “We just played our game. That’s it. A start like we had is everything. We came out hot. We put them down and showed them who we are.”
Miguel Iglesias netted a pair of goals in the opening minutes for the Tuskers, who built a 10-2 advantage before the Warriors began to push back late in the first half.
Wantagh closed to within four with six minutes gone in the second half, but Tristan Iglesias slammed the door on that run.
“This is another step,” Somers defender Bret Kennedy said. “We set a goal at the beginning of the year and this was the next step toward a state championship for this program.”
