🏳️‍⚧️ Sylvia Rivera was a transgender activist and a key figure in the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Although Rivera's fierce advocacy for trans and homeless people was initially rejected by many mainstream LGBTQ+IA groups, her legacy, work, and activism are forever ingrained in the history of trans rights. ❤️ With Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera co-founded the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). STAR advocated for LGBTQ+IA rights and bodily autonomy, and actively condemned transphobic abuse and discrimination both in and out of the queer community.
