Five peregrine falcons have been briefly spotted visiting the Campanile in recent months following the disappearance of famed UC Berkeley falcons Annie and Archie this winter. However, it may take time for new nesting birds to settle into the spot, if they ever do. After Annie, who first appeared in 2016, and her most recent partner Archie went missing, likely due to avian influenza, or “bird flu,” falcon fans have waited for another mating pair to take up residence. Although the visiting birds remain unnamed and unidentified, scientists are hopeful that another pair will settle, according to Mary Malec of Cal Falcons — a group of scientists and volunteers that monitor the birds and maintain a livestream of their nest.
