Neighborhood Pickleball LLC is proposing the construction of three pickleball courts on the roof of a Downtown Berkeley parking garage. Pickleball continues to rise in popularity across the Bay Area, and with it comes creative methods to meet growing demand — such as rooftop courts. Jim Jenkins, Neighborhood Pickleball LLC founder, is seeking a use permit to convert the sixth floor of the 2061 Allston Way parking garage into a series of courts. Since 2020, pickleball has been the fastest-growing sport in America, and Berkeley is feeling the ripple effects. Because parking garages in the San Francisco metropolitan area have become mostly empty since the pandemic and street-level space is limited, rooftops present an opportunity.
