A swarm of bees caused quite the buzz in our outdoor gardens last week! Check out this incredible footage of Francisco, Butterfly Pavilion’s Director of Research and Conservation, as he successfully relocates the swarm. Contrary to their intimidating appearance, swarming bees are actually quite docile. Since they have no hive to defend and are full of honey, they’re simply resting temporarily while scout bees search for a new nesting site. Thanks to their mellow behavior, swarms can usually be rescued safely and easily by experienced beekeepers. The process involves gently collecting the bees by shaking or brushing them into a box filled with old, familiar-smelling frames, securing the queen so the rest follow, and relocating them to a safe, permanent hive. Francisco goes gloveless to avoid accidentally harming any bees during the move. In return, the bees remain calm and have no need to sting. A swarm forms when the original queen leaves the hive with a group of experienced worker bee...
