A side of volcanic history, icy air & pitch-black tunnels. 🌋🧊🌲
Beyond the pines tucked beneath the ponderosa trees just 14 miles from campus, the Lava River Cave is one of Northern Arizona’s wildest natural wonders. This ancient lava tube was formed by molten rock over 700,000 years ago, and today it’s a nearly 1-mile hike through total darkness.
It stays a brisk 35–45°F year-round, so pack layers, headlamps, and solid shoes. Explore the incredible cave with its rocky floor, the cold air, and unique views. Totally surreal.
