Heartbreaking. 😢💔
This week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case that could have protected Oak Flat. Now, a foreign mining company is one step closer to turning this sacred Apache site into a 1000-ft deep copper mine.
Oak Flat (Chi’chil Biłdagoteel), located in the Tonto National Forest, has been used by the Apache for generations for prayer, coming-of-age rites, and ceremony. To many, it is a “living church” — sacred in the deepest spiritual sense.
Two Supreme Court justices, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas, dissented against the decision to dismiss the case. Gorsuch called it “one with consequences that threaten to reverberate for generations.”
If mining proceeds, Oak Flat will be turned into a two-mile-wide crater.
Apache Stronghold has stood firm in their decision, calling it an attack on religious freedoms and Indigenous sovereignty.
