It is truly artwork watching goaltenders who are skilled with their stick, whether it be controlling shots or preventing opportunities. One thing I have remarked about quite often in these playoffs is the amount of times Sergei Bobrovsky has used his stick to prevent Grade A opportunities. A very smart read here against arguably the best player in the world. Bob gets a solid read, realizing McDavid is on his back hand, that there is good defensive pressure on him and that his path to cut to the net will be well within his striking range. A perfectly timed and executed poke check, as Bob does not get opened up, thwarts the opportunity, and keeps the puck on the strong side of his net so it is easy for him to maintain position. This has been a great addition to Bob’s game in these playoffs and I encourage all young goaltenders and prospects alike to work on their stick skills.
