Last month, Acting Sergeant Tessa McManus and Senior Constable Dee Kuchenmeister were invited to Cultura, a Geelong-based multicultural organisation, to chat with refugee women starting their driving journey.
Unlike other safe driving initiatives, this one wasn’t only developed to help reduce the growing number of lives lost on Victorian roads.
For many of these women, getting a licence means freedom. It means being able to take their kids to school, go to appointments, visit friends – and most importantly, it means having choices.
The talk covered a range of topics including:
🚦 safe driving behaviours
🛑 understanding Victorian road rules, and
🚔 why road safety matters – for everyone.
The pair even touched on what to do if police attempt to pull you over.
Some of the women shared that in their home countries, police were to be feared. But after this session, they said they now feel more confident, not just behind the wheel, but around police too.
