President Donald Trump ignited controversy by threatening to withhold federal funding from California due to the state's stance on transgender athletes.
A trans athlete competed in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) in Clovis in May, sparking protests from parents and community leaders.
But even before that, President Trump had a brief quarrel with Maine Governor Janet Mills while hosting a business session with the National Governors Association at the White House in February.
Trump said the Democratic-run state will not receive any more federal funding until it complies with his executive order barring men from competing in women’s sports.
"You better comply because otherwise you're not getting any federal funding." He told Gov. Mills, who replied, "I'll see you in court.
"I look forward to that," Trump said. "That should be a real easy one."
