It's more likely than you think! 🫣 On This Day twenty years ago, the disastrous United States Grand Prix saw only six cars start the race after Michelin-shod teams suffered tyre failures on Indianapolis' high speed banking, with Toyota's Ralf Schumacher suffering a frightening echo of his back-breaking 2004 crash in practice. Replacement tyres were flown in by Michelin, only for those to fail too! 😰 Michelin refused to allow teams to race unsafe tyres, and the FIA in turn refused to allow requested circuit modifications. Plans to run the race as a non-championship event without the FIA disintegrated, and as only three teams ran the unproblematic Bridgestones - Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi - only three teams took the start, the Michelin runners pitting to withdraw after the formation lap.
