When Gov. Kim Reynolds vetoed a bill placing restrictions on eminent domain, House Speaker Pat Grassley was quick to respond.
"With the governor's veto of House File 639, I have sent a request to all members to sign a petition to reconvene the legislature in a special session to override the governor's veto," Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, said in a June 11 statement.
But Grassley's effort faces a math problem.
The Iowa Constitution allows Iowa lawmakers to convene a special session with the written support of two-thirds of both the House and Senate. While the bill passed overwhelmingly by an 85-10 vote in the Iowa House, the vote in the Senate was 27-22 in favor of the bill — short of the 34 votes needed to convene a special session.
