On a historic night for soccer in America, Tampa Bay Sun FC shined the brightest. Champions of the first ever uslsuperleague season. They kicked off their campaign by confidently riding a water taxi into their home opener, and now they close the curtain on this inaugural season with a gleaming trophy, thousands of new supporters, and an unquestionable place in the history books of our country. What a way to do it, too. All of yesterday felt like a celebration. From the festivities by the water ahead of kickoff to the sold out crowd at Riverfront Stadium, there was a feeling that there could only ever be one ending. Yes, the championship-winning goal took 100 minutes to come, but the Sun players, supporters, and staff willed it into existence for months, and arguably, years. It was the culmination of an arduous journey for everyone, yes, but also the start of what will hopefully be a golden period of growth for the team and women’s soccer in the city.
