Teachers across Pennsylvania continue to leave the education profession, exacerbating a years-long shortage that lawmakers and school officials are now working to fix. In all, nearly 8,900 people, or 7%, left the teaching profession statewide in 2024-25, according to a report from the Penn State Center for Evaluation & Education Policy Analysis, which used Pennsylvania Department of Education data. The update came as the number of in-state teacher certifications saw a slight increase in the 2023-24 school year. That year, 5,624 certifications were issued, an increase of 47 from the 2022-23 school year. But even with the slight increase in teacher certifications, high attrition rates are aggravating the state’s ongoing teacher shortage, Ed Fuller, an associate professor at Penn State’s College of Education who wrote the report, said.
