What's that? 👀 That dark oval is the Serra de Caldas, a plateau that rises about 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the landscape in central Brazil. The plateau is covered entirely by Cerrado, a rich savanna and grassland ecosystem that's home to species like the red-legged Seriema bird and the pequi tree. It was established as a state park in 1970. This image was taken on May 19, 2025, by the Landsat 9 satellite, a partnership between NASA and the USGS. Landsat 9, which launched into space in 2021, continuously orbits Earth at an altitude of 438 miles (705 km), traveling at over 16,000 miles an hour (26,000 kph) as it studies our changing planet. Image description: A multicolored landscape, as seen from space, is interrupted by a large, brownish-green oval just left of center. A large city can be seen at the top of the oval's right edge, with a snaking lake and river beyond. Credit: USGS/NASA #NASA #USGS #Landsat #Earth
