234 Year Old FestivalšāØ
The Yukaba no Kanmai ā is an important Shinto ritual held once every 7 years in the Yukaba region of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi.
Dating back to 1791, it features 12 sacred dances passed down through generations, performed as offerings to the gods. Recognized as a nationally designated intangible cultural heritage, itās one of the oldest surviving traditions in the area.
What makes it even more special is the incredible attention to detailāfrom the hand-carved masks to the towering wooden stage built solely for this moment. A structure that exists for only a few days, then disappears, just like the festival itself.
