JUNE 29th!
FREEDOM DAY!
THE POWER OF LITERACY!
Literacy was incredibly important to early African Americans as it represented freedom, empowerment, and opportunity. Literacy was a tool to escape slavery, participate in civic life, and improve economic standing.
HISTORY:
During slavery, laws prohibited Black people from learning to read and write.
FREEDOM!
Learning to read and write was seen as a pathway to liberation and a way to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
LIBERATION!
Before the Civil War, literacy was often denied to enslaved people, making the ability to read and write a powerful symbol of liberation.
