As the dust settles on the UN Ocean Conference in Nice last week, many of us are still processing what happened.
Transparency in industrial fishing finally got the spotlight it deserves. Momentum grew toward finalizing the Plastics Treaty in August. Calls for a moratorium on deep-sea mining were heard with four new countries joining. And the High Seas Treaty saw a surge in support with 19 more countries ratifying, bringing us to 50 out of the 60 needed for it to enter into force.
Other key issues had their voices heard at side events, like whale personhood and Antarctic governance. Although they did not surface in official outcomes, the conversation was started.
UNOC has grown from a quiet, little-known gathering into a major global event. That kind of energy matters. But what happens after these conferences is what truly counts. Will leaders hold up their promises?
