A UCLA student went viral after a video showed him pulling out his laptop during the graduation ceremony to display ChatGPT, the AI tool he used to finish a final project just hours before the event.
The clip, widely shared on social media, sparked debate. Critics called the move reckless and accused him of flaunting AI use, especially before grades were finalized. Others saw it as a symbol of how AI is reshaping education.
In response, the student posted a statement saying the final was open to AI tools and that he submitted it on time using ChatGPT. He called the tool a “thinking partner,” not a shortcut, and thanked OpenAI for helping him cross the finish line.
“AI is shaping not just what we do, but how we do it,” he wrote. “It was with me every step of the way, even at the end.”
