When I first stepped into the sports media space, I didn’t just study games, I studied greatness. I remember Jess in 2020 asking why I was watching old Oprah interviews on YouTube. She didn’t know I was training/watching how she asked questions, connected with guests, and held space. That kind of intentionality? It’s still with me today.
So here are 4 daily habits I swear by as an analyst and creator:
1. Study outside your space – Sports or not, storytelling is storytelling. Learning from Oprah taught me more about connection than any analytics ever could.
2. Self-scout every day – I try to watch at least one clip from the day before and ask, “How could I have said that better?” Athlete mindset never left. Shoutout to David Justice who drilled that into me back in high school.
3. Set a creative intention – Before I start recording or writing, I ask myself what I’m really trying to say today. Keeps me clear and consistent.
