The playoff in the second division of Italian football between Sampdoria and host Salernitana to decide who remained in Serie B was suspended midway through the second half after fans of the home side threw fireworks and seats onto the pitch.
Shortly after the Blucerchiati had taken a 2-0 lead in Sunday’s second leg - and a 4-0 lead on aggregate - Salernitana fans began to throw objects from the stands, causing the referee to take the players off the pitch.
Although officials attempted to restart the match, more protests and projectiles caused the suspension of the game.
According to the Associated Press, Sampdoria is likely to be awarded a 3-0 victory and ensure its position in Serie B while the Granata will be relegated to the third tier of Italian football.
