In 1982, an iconic part of the Minneapolis skyline was lost after a five-alarm fire broke out and burned down the Northwestern Bank building. It was one of the largest fires in U.S. History, and in it, we lost the Weatherball.
The Weatherball was a metal ball on top of the Northwestern Bank building that could be seen from 15 miles away. Its lights would change color in alignment with the weather report! It was the first of its kind, and unfortunately was lost in that fateful 1982 fire.
