Why does the 180-degree rule matter? Here’s a look at a sequence I shot for Michigan State Men’s Basketball. Visually, I’m proud of how it turned out—but one thing stands out: we broke the 180-degree line. The 180-degree rule is a filmmaking principle that helps maintain spatial orientation by keeping the camera on one side of an imaginary axis between two subjects. Crossing that line can confuse the audience or shift the emotional tone. In this case, breaking the rule didn’t ruin the scene—but it taught me how important that orientation really is. Now it’s something I consciously consider in every setup. Every project leaves you with a lesson. This was one of mine. #filmmakingtips #cinematography #behindthescenes #msubasketball #contentcreation #videographylife
