The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority just approved the process to rename Memphis International Airport in honor of Frederick W. Smith, founder of FedEx — the man who made Memphis a global logistics powerhouse.
Smith passed away Saturday at age 80. Born in Marks, MS, a Marine Corps vet, Yale grad, and visionary entrepreneur, he launched FedEx in 1973 — forever changing the city’s economy and identity. Today, FedEx employs over 30,000 people in the Memphis area.
Mayor Paul Young supports the move, and former Mayor Jim Strickland called Smith “the greatest Memphian of all time.”
💬 What y’all think? Should it be Fred Smith International, Smith Global, or something else?
