Berkeley child care centers are awaiting the arrival of a combined $80 million in emergency grant funding from the Measure C ballot initiative passed by Alameda County voters in 2020. The Measure C five-year plan was approved June 10. Paid for by a 0.5% increase in sales tax, it is designed to help struggling child care centers during the pandemic, according to First 5 Alameda County. The plan includes $209 million annually to be used toward expanding child care access, and First 5 Alameda County is the agency overseeing 80% of Measure C revenue along with disbursements of grants. Emergency grants are due to roll out in the coming weeks, and providers say they are in desperate need of relief.
