When Bruce was 18 years old, he dove into a river and was paralyzed from the neck down. In a matter of seconds, he lost his mobility and independence.
“The moment I hit the water, I knew something was wrong. I remember thinking, ‘I just killed myself,’” Bruce shares.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 1988, Bruce graduated with his first Canine Companions
#servicedog, who helped him regain his independence and peace of mind. Over the decades, Bruce has received four service dogs from them. His current dog, Bennett, helps with daily tasks like opening doors, picking up dropped items, and barking on cue for help when needed.
“My four service dogs have brought me the kind of freedom and companionship that can’t be measured,” Bruce says. “They have quite literally given me back my independence.”
