The Des Moines School Board is getting sticker shock over a proposed $500 million bond to pay for a sweeping 10-year plan to overhaul education within the state's largest public school district, asking district officials to come up with cheaper alternatives. The money would cover construction costs for the Reimagining Education, Reinvigorating Schools plan that would repurpose some of the district's buildings, close others and create signature schools specializing in areas such as the arts, sciences or technology. The plan also calls for expanding all-day preschool for 4-year-olds. Board members embraced the concept, even as several wanted to see less expensive options.
