Why innocent people should care about due process…
Sharon McMahon reminds us of something that often gets overlooked: the Constitution protects everyone within U.S. borders, not just citizens. So even if you were born here or feel like your rights are secure, they still depend on the same legal protections that apply to all.
Due process and Habeas Corpus are core parts of how our democracy functions. They make sure people aren’t detained or punished without a fair process. And those protections matter just as much — if not more — for people who are innocent.
In a democracy, the law is supposed to apply equally. If we allow anyone’s rights to be ignored, it opens the door for those same rights to be weakened for everyone.
Your rights aren’t safe if someone else’s can be ignored. That’s why due process matters.
