Beyond the clouds ☁️ Through a shroud of thick gas and dust, our NASAHubble telescope spotted a young, shining star. The swirling discs of material that surround a young star like this are usually funneled into twin jets of gas and dust; this star, however, has material spraying out in a fan-like pattern, traveling at velocities of up to 217 miles per second (350 kps). Astronomers used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, one of the telescope's two main camera systems, to measure how fast this outflow is moving. By measuring its velocity, astronomers are able to determine the star's distance (over 9,000 light-years from Earth), its brightness, and its mass—all vital information that will help shed light on this star's unusual outflow.
