Let’s talk about seagrass!
These underwater meadows are one of the most powerful climate tools we have.
Seagrasses are flowering plants with deep roots that grow in shallow ocean waters around most of the world. They trap and bury carbon in the ocean sediment (sometimes as deep as four meters!) and can store up to twice as much carbon per hectare as forests on land.
Although they cover less than 0.2% of the ocean, seagrasses are responsible for about 10% of the carbon buried in ocean sediment each year. That’s a massive contribution from such a tiny fraction of the sea!
Seagrass meadows also filter water, support fisheries, buffer coastlines from storms, and provide habitat for sea turtles, manatees, and so many other species.
Unlike trees, seagrasses don’t grow upward to compete for sunlight—they grow outward. As long as there’s space and clean water, they can keep spreading, making them a powerful, natural solution to climate change.
