One of the still frames from this timelapse is featured in my book, MONTANA: Photographs from the Last Best Place.
It captures the night sky over Bannack, the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery in 1862 and the territory’s original capital in 1864. Bannack grew quickly, filled with miners, merchants, and a fair share of criminals. At its peak, 10,000 residents called this remote town home.
One of the most infamous figures was Henry Plummer, the town’s sheriff who was secretly leading a gang of outlaws( allegedly). Plummer and some of his gang, “The Innocents”, were eventually hanged by local vigilantes after being accused of organizing robberies and over a hundred murders.
By 1865, the capital was moved to Virginia City and Bannack’s decline began. Today, more than 60 buildings still stand, preserved as part of Bannack State Park. The park is closed to the public after dark, but I was granted special permission to photograph at night.
