🧬 The male saiga antelope is one of the most distinctive mammals on Earth, instantly recognizable by its inflated, trunk-like nose that filters dust in summer and warms frigid air in winter. These ancient ungulates roam the grasslands and semi-deserts of Central Asia, with males distinguished by their translucent, ridged horns that can grow up to 20 centimeters long. Only males possess these prized horns, which unfortunately makes them targets for poaching as they're valued in traditional medicine, contributing to the species' critically endangered status.⁠ ⁠ During rutting season in late autumn, male saigas undergo dramatic physical transformations, developing swollen necks and becoming extremely territorial. Dominant males establish harems of 5-50 females, engaging in fierce battles with rivals using their horns as weapons.
