Portland’s largest overnight-only homeless shelter to date will be in the Pearl District, city officials have announced.
The city has signed a lease for the Sturgeon Development Partners-owned building on 1435 Northwest Northrup Street and has begun the work of turning it into a nighttime shelter for 200 guests, according to city spokesperson Rob Layne.
The Northrup Shelter is the fifth new overnight-only, city-run shelter announced since Portland Mayor Keith Wilson took office in January with a voter-endorsed plan to provide a shelter bed for every person who needs one. For Wilson’s plan to work, the city will need to site and begin operating at least a dozen new shelters throughout the city, officials confirmed Monday. That means that about seven more, as yet unannounced, new overnight-only shelters are likely to be built in neighborhoods throughout the city this year.
