In 2024, the RCMP is marking the 50th anniversary of female police officers in the organization. When Constable Christine Windover graduated from the RCMP’s Depot in 1975, she was part of the second all-female recruit class. Her working uniform included a skirt, pillbox hat, low-heeled black pumps and a shoulder purse to carry her lady-sized pistol. After the RCMP changed the policy that prevented women from joining the Musical Ride, she traded that uniform for the traditional Stetson, breeches, red serge and high boots of the Musical Ride, joining as one of its first female members.
