Plastic Bag Free Day, marked every July 3, is a global reminder of the urgent need to phase out single-use plastics that harm our oceans, wildlife, and communities. Plastic bags, used for minutes but polluting for centuries are among the most widespread and deadly forms of marine debris, entangling sea turtles, choking coral reefs, and infiltrating our food chains as microplastics.
These thin sheets of convenience have become a powerful symbol of our throwaway culture and a rallying point for sustainable change. Ending their use is a critical step in protecting marine biodiversity, reducing plastic pollution, and fostering a circular economy.
As part of this year’s Ocean Awareness Contest theme, “Connections to Nature: Looking Inside, Going Outside,” we’re highlighting ten compelling youth artworks that confront plastic waste head-on. These bold visual stories remind us that eliminating plastic bags isn’t just possible, it’s necessary.
