We’re closing out Black Music Month with singer Kenny Lattimore, DMV native and Howard’s very own. Lattimore rose to fame in the mid-1990s with hits like “For You” and “Never Too Busy,” but he came from humble beginnings of performing anywhere that would allow him to do what he loved. As a Howard University freshman, he was discovered and signed to a record deal. Starting as an architecture and planning major and later moving to the College of Fine Arts, he credits The Mecca for shaping him as an artist and person, and his mother for encouraging him to attend her Alma Mater. Lattimore also believes Black Music Month is an important celebration for the “culture makers and music changers.” “We’re going to come up with the next sound because we always have—from country to rock, to hip hop to underground, and soul—all these different things have come from us that the world celebrates,” Lattimore said.
