🌊 July 15 is Arctic Sea Ice Day ❄️ A global reminder of the critical role sea ice plays in regulating our planet’s climate.
Did you know that burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and methane releases several gases into the atmosphere? These include carbon dioxide (CO₂), water vapor (H₂O), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Collectively known as greenhouse gases, they accumulate in the atmosphere, trapping heat like a blanket and warming our air, land, and oceans. As this heat trapping blanket thickens causing the climate to warm, the melting of arctic sea ice poses a threat to these communities as well as the polar bears that call it home.
Changes to sea ice have far-reaching consequences for Arctic communities. As sea ice diminishes, traditional livelihoods and food sources are disrupted, threatening the food security of people who rely on ice-dependent ecosystems. Moreover, vital transportation routes ...
