Perhaps no athlete has ever become a star in local high school track and field more quickly than Jane Hickey. And considering the caliber of talent to come out of the Section 1 area that's saying a lot.
Coach Jan Mitchell said when the junior went to her first track practice last winter after never having competed in the sport, he knew she was special.
But he had no idea how special.
"It's been a magical six months," he said.
This spring, after doing pretty much the unthinkable and winning a state championship in her first season of track competition, she captured another at another distance ā in fact, two state titles with a public school league class championship and overall Federation (private and public schools of all sizes).
Mitchell, who founded the Ursuline program and has coached scores of future collegiate athletes over a decades-long career, had never had a girl win an individual outdoor state track title before.
