CIRCA 1780 ARTIFACT! A 9-pound carronade was excavated from a St. Augustine shipwreck in the summer of 2011 and cleaned by our conservation team at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum! This very rare 9-pounder carronade was cast at the Carron Iron Company in Falkirk, Scotland. It is dated 1780 and is one of the first of its kind. Artillery experts at the Tower of London believe this to be the second-oldest carronade to have survived anywhere in the world. This smaller cannon, weighing in around 800 pounds, is on view with dozens of artifacts in WRECKED! The Story of a Revolutionary War Shipwreck. The ship is believed to be one of the 16 ships that wrecked in this area on Dec. 31, 1782, traveling with loyalists that were evacuating Charleston during the Revolutionary War. See the artifacts in the basement of the Keepers’ House and in the working conservation lab on sight. This is all included in museum admission. Hours are 9 AM-6 PM seven days a week.
