A tribute to D. Wayne Lukas. On Monday morning at Churchill Downs with Laurie Lukas and Bas Nicholl looking on, outrider Greg Blasi led out Wayne’s pony, with his rain slicker on the back of the saddle and boots facing backwards in the stirrups, to honor the Hall of Fame trainer who sadly passed away Saturday night at the age of 89. After facing complications from a severe infection, Wayne passed away at his home in Louisville surrounded by family. He was known by many as a Hall of Famer, a Cowboy, a Coach, a Trainer, an Industry Legend, but known by all as a great man whose legacy extends far beyond any measurable distance.
