It wasn’t that long ago that Oregon’s sea stars were doomed. In 2014, scientists were working quickly to identify the mysterious wasting disease that had already killed off millions of sea stars along the Pacific Coast, including nearly the entire population around Oregon’s famous Haystack Rock. Jamie Kish, @girlinwaterphotography , a marine biologist and tide pool ambassador based in Yachats, said those years were grim for people who monitored the health of the intertidal ecosystem in Oregon. Earlier this summer, Kish led a group of 10 people out into the tidepools at Yachats State Recreation Site on the central Oregon coast at low tide. The volunteers were armed with clipboards, rulers and waterproof boots (except for Kish, who wears sandals and rainbow-striped socks), ready to crouch, crawl and clamber around the exposed rocks.
