🥳 Once extinct in Argentina, Giant River Otters have been returned to the wild thanks to
#rewilding 👏
rewilding_argentina, an offspring organization of tompkins_conservation, has released a family of otters into the Iberá wetlands. This milestone marks the return of this species in Argentina. There hasn’t been a breeding population of Giant River Otters in the country since the 1980s.
Rewilding Argentina has led this ambitious project for the past eight years, working with organizations around the world to rehome and rewild captive Giant River Otters from numerous zoos. 💦 Once at the reintroduction site in Iberá, these otters learned to fish on their own, raised pups, and formed multiple family groups that will become part of the founding wild population.
🐟 Now the Giant River Otter can once again take its place as Argentina’s top aquatic predator, helping to regulate prey populations, ensuring the health of aquatic ecosystems.
